.hack//INFECTION Part 1 is the rather strange name of the first in a four-part RPG series that offers an innovative twist: it simulates a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) without the need to actually go online. What's more, the game is actually one component of a multimedia tale that also takes in a 26-part TV series, an original video animation series that runs concurrent to each instalment of the game, and even a comic book series.

The .hack story begins with the 26 episode TV series .hack//SIGN, which introduces the .hack universe prior to the events in INFECTION and leads up directly to the beginning of the game. The year is 2007. A network game called 'The World' has taken the gaming community by storm thanks to its limitless possibilities, but in actuality the game is being used to feed a new, highly advanced form of AI with information.

INFECTION centres on teenagers Kite and Orca, two players of The World who discover that there's much more to its virtual universe than meets the eye when they're completely absorbed into it and attacked by a monster. As a result, Orca falls into a coma in the real world and it's up to Kite to investigate The World and find a way to revive his friend.

As Kite, you'll fight through numerous contaminated levels of cyberspace, unlocking codes that'll grant you access to new environments and embarking on a multitude of quests. Each part of the game also comes bundled with a bonus DVD featuring episodes from .hack//LIMINALITY, an animated series that shows the events that occur in the real world as Kite embarks on his honourable online quest.
